Yet Another Tiger Kidnapping Attempt
|
|

Boy (14) handcuffed with dad in failed tiger kidnap
GARDAI had to use bolt cutters to rescue a 14-year-old boy who was handcuffed with his father during a failed tiger kidnap attempt.
Last night, detectives were hunting up to seven members of the armed gang involved in the raid in Dublin.
Their target was a senior manager of the major security firm Chubb Ireland and the gang had intended to take some of his family captive while forcing the man to hand over a large amount of cash from his company's vaults.
Last night, the man, his wife and three children, ranging from 14 to five years, were recovering from the traumatic experience in which one of the raiders put a gun to the target's head and threatened all of the family.
Their ordeal began at 6.20pm on Sunday when two men banged on the front door of their home at Windmill Crescent in the south Dublin suburb of Crumlin.

Gardai expect no let-up in Tiger Kidnapping
|
|

Sunday Independent
By Jim Cusack
Sunday July 25 2010
Gardai and security experts expect no let-up in tiger kidnappings as 'protocols' put in place to try and reduce risk and stop the robbers fail to prevent terrorised people from putting their families before their employer's cash.
The majority of the main tiger raid gangs in Ireland are on holiday in Spain, giving some relief to the gardai and staff of banks and cash handling companies. However, the guards firmly believe that on their return the gangs intend going back to their work of stalking the vulnerable families of people working in businesses that handle large amounts of cash. There was a recent alert when a leading member of one of the gangs returned from Spain unexpectedly but it appears to have been only for family reasons.
The gangs, responsible for some of the most cruel kidnappings in recent years, have been examining new security systems and protocols put in place by banks and security companies, testing their effectiveness and working out new strategies.
Gardai now believe that their new strategy will be to target a wider range of businesses. Banks, and the Bank of Ireland in particular, have reduced the amount of cash being held in branches. Businesses that need large amounts of cash are no longer collecting the money in banks but having it delivered by security companies.
This, gardai say, has lifted some of the threat to bank staff but increased the threat to staff of the cash delivery companies.
Protocols announced last November by the Minister for Justice, the Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy and the banks were supposed to have stopped the kidnap-robberies, but they continued through the first half of the year and gardai are certain that more are planned.

Update on Tiger
|
|

A PENSIONER was among three suspects being questioned by gardai last night after armed officers recovered part of the €210,000 haul taken in a tiger kidnap on Tuesday.
The grandfather is suspected of acting as a minder for some of the money stolen by a Dublin south inner-city gang.
Acting on intelligence, gardai seized €30,000 after arresting two other suspects, aged 23 and 38, when they intercepted a car on the banks of the Royal Canal in Finglas, west Dublin, on Wednesday night.
Justice Minister Dermot Ahern yesterday congratulated gardai on the operation.
"I understand that a sizeable sum of money has been identified as being part of the proceeds of the robbery," he said.
But he was critical of the failure of AIB to implement agreed protocols, which he said had been designed to ensure bank staff safety in tiger kidnaps.

Arrest Follows Dublin 'Tiger Kidnapping'
A man has been detained in connection with a so-called tiger kidnapping attempt in Dublin this morning.
According to Gardaí, the incident began shortly after 6.30am when a woman was taken from her Ballyfermot home in a vehicle.
Her kidnappers then demanded the bank official obtain a sum of money from the bank and await instructions. It is believed that up to five people were involved and some are believed to have been armed.
A gardaí spokesman said that just after 12 noon the woman was released and sought assistance from a local resident. She has no physical injuries.
At 12.15pm, members from the Organised Crime Unit supported by the Emergency Response Unit arrested a man in his mid twenties at Kimmage Road West. He is currently detained at Crumlin Garda Station under the Criminal Justice Act.
